THE TIMES – 21 February 2012
As reported by Doctor Mark Porter in The Times today (Tuesday 21st February 2012), computers now play a crucial role in helping with the two most common mental health complaints — depression and anxiety.
……”for most conditions the computer acts as little more than a convenient repository for printable patient information leaflets, but when it comes to the two most common mental health complaints — depression and anxiety — it now plays a crucial role in both confirming the diagnosis and treating the patient, as well as helping to monitor progress along the way”.
He goes on to say …..
“The idea of being counselled by your computer may seem odd but the Beating the Blues programme (for treatment of depression) seems to work as effectively in most people as face-to-face therapy, which in turn has been shown to work as well as antidepressant medication in mild to moderate depression. And, in the longer term, talking therapies have the added advantage of helping to develop new coping strategies for dealing with future bouts of depression or anxiety that have a habit of recurring over the years”.
FearFighter™ was highlighted as the NHS approved online CBT programme for treatment of panic attacks and phobias.
